We consider a spread spectrum model in which each user is decoded by all the receivers in the network (macrodiversity). We use a carrier-to-interference performance criterion that we derive from Shannon theory; each user must find the right transmitter power level to satisfy its carrier-to-interference constraint. Satisfying this requirement for all users is equivalent to solving a fixed point problem. We use this power control problem to derive the network capacity region and find that the feasibility of a configuration of users is independent of their positions in the network; each user can be assigned a bandwidth that is independent of the user's position in the network. Our capacity region is an upper bound over all schemes that treat the interference of other users as pure noise. To show that the capacity can be realized in practice we propose a decentralized power adaptation algorithm and prove global convergence to the fixed point via a monotonicity argument. 2012-11-28T02:26:34.265Z ]]> A Method for determining the diffusion coefficient in Fe(II/III) radiation dosimetry gels using finite elements http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:22634 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to image three-dimensional dose distributions of ionizing radiation in tissue equivalent gels infused with ferrous sulphate solutions, commonly known as Fricke gels. In this technique, ferrous (Fe2+) ions are oxidized to ferric (Fe3+) ions by free radicals produced by ionizing radiation. A limitation on this technique is the diffusion of ferric (Fe3+) ions in the gel. A method is presented for evaluating the diffusion coefficient in Fricke gels. Finite elements are used to model variations of the concentration in space, coupled with an analytical scheme to integrate the resulting system of equations through time. This method may be used for problems with one, two or three space dimensions and with arbitrary initial and boundary conditions. Results are presented for one- and two-dimensional data. 2012-11-05T02:21:41.281Z ]]> Ordination by media?: analysis of news texts constructing the debate over women's ordination to the priesthood in the Anglican Church of Australia in four daily newspapers, 1987-1992 http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:20491 "March 1995" 2012-10-25T23:53:58.368Z ]]> American automobile names http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:22219 339 page(s) 2012-10-23T00:32:02.188Z ]]> Linkage of a familial platelet disorder with a propensity to develop myeloid malignancies to human chromosome 21q22.1-22.2 http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21597 Linkage analysis was performed on a large pedigree with an autosomal dominant platelet disorder and a striking propensity in affected family members to develop hematologic malignancy, predominantly acute myelogenous leukemia. We report the linkage of the autosomal dominant platelet disorder to markers on chromosome 21q22. Four genetic markers completely cosegregate with the trait and yield maximum logarithm of difference scores ranging from 4.9 to 10.5 (θ = .001). Two flanking markers, D21S1265 and D21S167, define a critical region for the disease locus of 15.2 centimorgan. Further analysis of this locus may identify a gene product that affects platelet production and function and contributes to the molecular evolution of hematologic malignancy. 2012-09-26T12:54:50.376Z ]]> Respiratory complications of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21606 Pulmonary complications are described in a case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, established by studies of collagen biosynthesis. At age 20.5 years the patient, who had previously suffered a spontaneous colonic perforation, developed intermittent recurrent hemoptysis and had a spontaneous hemopneumothorax. At presentation, imaging studies revealed multiple scattered cavitary lesions in both lungs. On separate occasions large parenchymal cysts ensued and subsequently regressed. Reviews of other reported patients indicate that pulmonary complications do occur in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV but have not resulted directly in patient mortality. 2012-09-26T12:54:34.641Z ]]> Grouped papules in Hurler-Scheie syndrome http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21629 In a patient with Hurler-Scheie syndrome, a type of mucopolysaccharidosis (1 H/S), an initial presentation was grouped papules on the extensor surfaces on the upper portions of the arms and legs. Other physical findings included progressive flexion contractures and mild developmental delay. The patient had deficient alpha-L-iduronidase activity, and electron microscopy showed large cytoplasmic vacuoles and lysosomes, consistent with Hurler-Scheie syndrome. Findings of grouped papules have not been previously reported in patients with this syndrome. 2012-09-26T12:53:51.734Z ]]> A Novel missense mutation in the exon containing the putative ornithine-binding domain of the OTC enzyme in a female http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21661 1 page(s) 2012-09-26T12:52:48.838Z ]]> Nonketotic hyperglycinemia : atypical clinical and biochemical manifestations http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21568 A 16-year-old boy had intermittent chorea, delirium, and vertical gaze palsy precipitated by febrile illness. Confirmation of an atypical variant of nonketotic hyperglycinemia with residual glycine cleavage enzyme activity has important implications for diagnosis and treatment. 2012-09-21T05:50:12.342Z ]]> The Metal trades industry association, bargaining structures and the accord http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21017 As part of his more general argument about employer reactivity in Australia, David Plowman has asserted that the disunity of Australian employer associations has inhibited their success in initiating policy debates or strategically reshaping bargaining structures. However, this paper, in examining the industrial relations strategies and policies of the Metal Trades Industry Association under the Accord, argues that the association seized substantial initiative in policy debates relating to bargaining structures and in influencing the pace and direction of change regarding the progressive implementation of enterprise bargaining in Australia. This had nothing to do with unity or disunity among employer groups, but related to factors internal to the association, its industry-and, in particular, the association's evolving relationship with the industry's unions-and to circumstances regarding the public policy-making process. 2012-09-10T16:41:19.055Z ]]> Regional end-use gas demand in Australia http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:19665 End-use energy models explain the demand for energy by households at the level of specific end uses, such as space heating, cooking and water heating. An important advantage of end-use energy models is their usefulness in analyzing complex policy questions relevant to understanding and managing the demand for energy. With data available on total household gas demand and appliance ownership, the statistical method of conditional demand analysis (CDA) is utilized to estimate the end-use consumptions of reticulated gas in Australia. We extend the existing literature by expanding the scope of the analysis to different regions of Australia thus providing a comprehensive national picture of end-use gas consumption and facilitating interregional comparisons. Our results show that there are significant interregional differences in the gas consumption for different end uses. Energy policies which ignore these interregional differences, for example, national policies aimed at persuading households to switch from electricity to gas in order to reduce CO₂ emissions, are likely to lead to inefficient or ineffective outcomes. 2012-06-07T18:13:51.050Z ]]> Race and organized labor in Australia, 1850-1901 http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:17477 18 page(s) 2012-02-08T21:30:43.384Z ]]> Marginal workers in the big picture : unionization of visual artists http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:17475 Australian unions face a crisis of declining membership density. An important contributor has been the increased proportion of marginal workers in the total labour force. These workers include casual and part-time workers, and sub contractors and the 'self-employed'. Visual artists typify the marginal workforce. Most are employed most of the time on a commission or contract basis, their employment is intermittent, their income is appallingly low, and they are poorly unionized. A small majority of visual artists are women. A tiny Art workers Union struggled to survive from 1979. More recently, the Operative Painters and Decorators Union has attempted to organize artists, gaining awards for them in two states, and pursuing job-creation policies in the building industry for artists. However, the Painters and Decorators' intervention has been controversial, and it has failed to attract many artist members. The new Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance seems to be a more appropriate union. However, a major problem for unionization of artists is the individualism determined largely by the nature of the creative labour process. If unions are to achieve effective coverage of artists, they will need to adopt innovative approaches, which will have significant implications for unionism generally. 2012-02-08T01:50:02.795Z ]]> Beyond human communities : self-identity, animal rights and vegetarianism http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:13962 9 page(s) 2011-07-04T12:21:23.463Z ]]> The Englishness of English cricket http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:13913 The game cricket has become almost synonymous with all that is English. Of the three major British sports, which are soccer, rugby and cricket, the later has taken on board a cultural weight which has projected it out of the realm of the competitive and professional. The origins of cricket are not known, it is just certain that the game is very old. Primarily, from this sense of age, the sport has derived the aura of value which influenced its popularity. Although cricket is reliably recorded as an organized sport in the early 17th century, it became a national part-time in the 18th century. While cricket has thus taken its place as a professional sport, played for the amusement of the wealthy aristocracy, it was also being played in the great Public Schools. In the realm of political and education reform, cricket still find its way in the system. The traditions which the sport had cultivated, enabled a sustaining view of an England based on the county and the village in which essentially organic ties of service and social responsibility formed the matrix of power. Cricket was able to offer a vision of a pastoral and rural England in which the social classes could unite to defend hereditary rights against the encroachment of the modern society. 2011-07-01T02:20:47.201Z ]]> Choice in English testing methods : a case for communicative language testing in Thailand http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:13808 8 page(s) 2011-06-28T06:22:22.464Z ]]> On the aspectual interactions between verbs and NPs http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:13444 In this paper a formal analysis of the aspectual interactions between the verb and the noun phrases (Nps) of simple sentences will be introduced. Recently, new laser-based technology has been developed at the University of Guelph for the accurate, high-speed measurement of the concentration and fluxes of trace gases. This tunable diode laser trace gas analyzer system (TDLTGAS) has been used to continuously monitor nitrous oxide fluxes from several agricultural surfaces, in a research program initiated in 1991. The natural event that caused the largest fluxes was soil thawing during the spring on non-cropped plots (bare soil, bare soil plus manure, and ploughed-down alfalfa). Monthly average fluxes of between 70 and 110 ng m⁻² a⁻¹ were observed during March and April of 1993 and 1994. Emissions from alfalfa and bluegrass plots were between 2 and 6 ng m⁻²s⁻¹ during spring thaw. During the winter of 1993/94 emissions ranged from 2 to 6 ng m⁻²s⁻¹ for snow covered plots, except for the ploughed-down alfalfa which averaged 30 ± 3.5 ng m⁻²s⁻¹. A summary of methane fluxes measured by our research group using the TDLTGAS over agriculture surfaces including rice paddies, and natural surfaces such as northern wetlands, lakes, and the boreal forest are also discussed. 2011-02-22T06:10:19.631Z ]]> Aspects of myodocopin (Ostracoda) biology and crustacean iridescence http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:11019 "October 1995" 2010-12-21T07:00:18.607Z ]]> Like broken pieces of a ring : 2 Cor. 11, 32-33 and ancient theories of literary unity http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:10187 Johannes Weiss was the first to suggest that 2 Cor 1.1–2.13; 7.5–16 was once an independent work. Weiss saw that the tone of these chapters varied, not only from chapter 10–13, but also from the intervening text, 2.14–7.4. Here the reconciliation is not apparent, which, in chapters 1–2 and 7, is the presupposition of Paul's joy. On the contrary, Paul must still answer charges that he has wronged, corrupted, and defrauded the Corinthians, and must plead with the Corinthians to open their hearts (2.17; 4.1–2; 6.3–13; 7.2–4). This passage must have been written at the height of the conflict, before the successful conclusion of peace. Then, Paul wrote again in a cordial manner, to assure the Corinthians of his confidence, and to remove the lingering traces of doubt. The proof of this analysis Weiss discovered in the connection between 2.13 and 7.5: the account of Paul's anxious search for Titus breaks off at the decisive point (2.13) and resumes only four chapters later (7.5) at the very point where it had broken off. ‘This separation of what belongs together is unheard of and intolerable, from a literary point of view, since 2.13 and 7.5 fit onto each other as neatly as the broken pieces of a ring. 2010-10-25T05:10:50.697Z ]]> Medievalism as cultural process in pre-industrial popular literature http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:8879 17 page(s) 2010-07-08T12:40:18.792Z ]]> Translating the Bible: a critical analysis of E.A.
