Two high-pressure phase transitions have been noted previously, which the authors have located at 5 kbar and 41 kbar. They have studied all three phases by Raman spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction. The symmetric (FHF) stretching vibration is at a significantly higher frequency in phase I (631 cm⁻¹ at ambient) than in phase II (623 cm⁻¹ and 612 cm⁻¹ at 10.6 kbar). The phase I structure is also incompressible down the triad axis, along which the (FHF) groups are oriented. The phase II X-ray data were fitted by a monoclinically distorted marcasite-like cell. This structure is easily derived from that of phase I by a shear, with accompanying rotation of the (FHF) groups into two distinct orientations consistent with the observed splitting of the Raman modes. A further 5% volume discontinuity occurs at the II-III transition. The diffraction data for phase III index on a tetragonal cell whose dimensions suggest a variant of the structure adopted by KHF₂ at ambient pressure. 2013-06-17T02:22:22.995Z ]]> A Quantitative kinetic study of the i to or from II phase transition of ammonium chloride http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:26008 The I to or from II phase transition of ammonium chloride has been studied using energy-dispersive powder diffraction with a synchrotron source of X-radiation. The equilibrium transition temperature was found to be 184.5+or-0.5 degrees C and the activation energy for the transformation was found to be 213+or-15 kJ mol⁻¹. The transition was satisfactorily described using the Avrami equation with a shape parameter of 3. 2013-06-17T02:22:17.154Z ]]> A New white beam single crystal and powder diffraction facility at the SRS http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:26009 A new white beam single-crystal Laue diffraction (LD) and energy-dispersive powder diffraction (EDPD) facility has been constructed on station 9.7 of the SRS. This station receives radiation from a 5-T superconducting wiggler magnet with useful photon flux from 5 to 60 keV and a peak flux on the sample of 7×10¹¹ photons/s/mm² in a 0.1% bandwidth at 10 keV. The novel design of this facility allows rapid changeover between the two experiments without compromising either. Components have been built in a modular manner for ease of optimization for a particular set of data capture conditions. 2013-06-17T02:22:12.911Z ]]> Development of a Unix/VME data acquisition system http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:26010 The current status of a Unix-based VME data acquisition development project is described. It is planned to use existing Fortran data collection software to drive the existing CAMAC electronics via a VME CAMAC branch driver card and associated Daresbury Unix driving software. The first usable Unix driver has been written and produces single-action CAMAC cycles from test software. The data acquisition code has been implemented in test mode under Unix with few problems and effort is now being directed toward finalizing calls to the CAMAC-driving software and ultimate evaluation of the complete system. 2013-06-17T02:22:07.579Z ]]> Second-order phase transition in PbO and SnO at high pressure : implications for the litharge-massicot phase transformation http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:26011 We have studied the structural behavior of PbO at high pressure by powder neturon diffraction in a McWhan cell, and by energy-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. A phase (γ-PbO) occurs at room temperature between ∼0.7 and ∼2.5 GPa pressure, between the stability fields of litharge (<0.7 GPa) and massicot (2.5-10.1 GPa). There is presumably a triple point in the system at a few kbar and 0-200 °C. The phase is related to litharge by a reversible second-order transition. We infer that this is associated with the collapse of the eu acoustic mode. Unit-cell data at 1.6 GPa are Pm21n, a=4.027(3) , b=3.950(3) , c=4.767(4) , and Z=2. The pressure evolution of the spontaneous strain follows a simple Landau model. There are four distinct solid-state transformation paths between litharge and massicot that maintain the known topotactic relationship between the phases, maintain the translational symmetry common to both, and make use of continuous transitions between group-subgroup related structural intermediates. Both the γ phase and the modulated low-temperature phase of PbO are closely related to one step on one of these paths. Although there is evidence to suggest that the intermediate states do have a transient existence, several paths appear to be utilized. A transition to a γ-like phase also occurs in SnO, at 2.5 GPa, although there is no evidence of a massicotlike polymorph of this compound. The orthorhombic phase is stable to at least 7.5 GPa. 2013-06-17T02:22:03.288Z ]]> A Square's safari http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:25693 15 minutes comedy animation. This unit has implemented a philosophy of training based on a motor learning model for rehabilitation proposed by Carr and Shepherd (1987a and b). The proposed motor learning model stresses the need for task and context specific training of everyday actions. Data, including patient characteristics and Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) scores, were collected through a retrospective audit of all patients diagnosed as having a CVA and discharged from the unit during 1989. The major finding of this study was that, following rehabilitation within a multi-disciplinary program, patients were able to improve their motor performance as demonstrated by changes in MAS scores. The measurement of outcome of rehabilitation for this unit has contributed to quality assurance by identifying motor tasks that warrant further emphasis in training in order to improve upon the reported outcome of rehabilitation. 2013-05-22T01:30:36.557Z ]]> The structural and metamorphic evolution of the central Arunta Block: evidence from the Strangways Metamorphic Complex and the Harts Range Group, central Australia http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:25474 "July, 1991" 2013-05-09T09:32:30.011Z ]]> Radiation dose to patients and staff from Storz Modulith SL20 lithotripter http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:22652 Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) uses either X-ray fluoroscopy or ultrasound to localize and determine the end point of treatment. The mean annual radiation dose to patients and staff was calculated at 0.73 mSv and 4.8 mSv, respectively. 2012-11-05T02:20:58.701Z ]]> Lateralized deficits in visual attention in males with developmental dopamine depletion http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21576 Children with early treated phenylketonuria (ETPKU), a disorder associated with developmental dopamine depletion, were tested with a visual orienting paradigm to determine the existence of lateralized deficits in specific attentional operations. Male ETPKU subjects showed a right visual field impairment in disengaging attention. indicating left hemisphere dysfunction and overall slowed reaction times. Female ETPKU and normal subjects did not differ. The results suggest that for males, dopamine depletion disrupts left hemisphere function. This finding has important implications for disorders with suspected developmental dopamine abnormalities, and may also illustrate how sex differences in functional lateralization develop in the normal brain. 2012-09-26T12:55:30.308Z ]]> A Lethal syndrome resembling branchio-oculo-facial syndrome http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21603 Branchio-oculo-facial syndrome, a recently delineated autosomal dominant condition, is characterized by branchial cleft sinuses, ocular anomalies, and unusual facial appearance. A patient with branchial cleft fistulae, microphthalmia, nasomaxillary dysplasia, in addition to cardiac and CNS malformation (holoprosencephaly and meningo-encephalocele), is described. Although many features of this lethal malformation complex resemble those seen in the branchio-oculo-facial syndrome, the complex may represent a new multiple malformation syndrome. 2012-09-26T12:54:40.816Z ]]> Periventricular white matter cystic lesions in Lowe (Oculocerebrorenal) syndrome : a new MR finding http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:21613 The Lowe (Oculocerebrorenal)syndrome is an X-linked disorder characterized by psychomotor retardation, hypotonia, congenital cateracts, glaucoma and renal tubular dysfunction. Medieval literature is increasingly seen as an area of intense specialism which is to be treated differently from other areas of English studies. The essays collected here try to overturn this perception in two ways. Firstly, there is a demonstration of the ways in which modern critical approaches and perspectives work with the medieval text. Secondly, the idea of the medieval is shown, historically, to be a discourse which has been given different symbolic values and served different social purposes. The first half of the book contains essays on feminist and structural approaches to the medieval text as well as a polemical evaluation of post-structuralist criticism and an introduction to modern approaches to manuscript studies. In the second half medievalism is analyzed through case-studies from the Renaissance, the eighteenth century and the nineteenth century. 2011-07-01T02:20:54.872Z ]]> One watt average power by second harmonic and sum frequency generation from a single medium scale copper vapor laser http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:11642 Ultraviolet (UV) powers of over 1 W have been obtained by second harmonic and sum frequency generation from a single medium scale (20 W) copper vapor laser (CVL) using a new focal geometry in which the CVL beam is focused in only one direction to produce a line focus within a BBO crystal. High optical conversion efficiencies, 20 and 30%, are observed for the low divergence (~-10 times the diffraction limit) and diffraction-limited components of the CVL output, respectively. Wall-plug efficiencies for UV generation are up to 0.04%. Efficient frequency conversion has also been demonstrated for CVL operating conditions unsuited to the generation of diffraction limited output. 2011-02-04T05:20:23.743Z ]]> Music and color : relations in the psychophysical perspective http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:10616 Relations between music and color have long been debated, it seems inconclusively. I describe the theory behind three electronic sound-to-light transducers built to give a visual impression of music to students and deaf people. In psychophysical theory, any psychological correlation between music and color must derive primarily from the physical stimuli, which, as sonic or radiant energy, have only two variables: (a) amplitude, causing loudness or brightness/lightness: and (b) wavelength, causing musical tone or hue. Correlation of tone and hue is also indicated by their cyclic nature, as octave cycle and hue cycle. Accordingly, only the latter cycle can represent the former. 2010-11-17T04:30:24.746Z ]]> Making wider connections : changes in library systems and technology at the University of Technology, Sydney http://www.researchonline.mq.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/mq:1088 This article describes developments in library systems and technology at the University of Technology, Sydney Library from January 1990 to December 1992 in the context of changes in organisational mission and structure and the emergence of the Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet). 2010-06-24T10:06:10.428Z ]]>
