- Description
- This book critically examines the films of Australian independent filmmaker Rupert Kathner who, from 1934 to 1951, defied Hollywood-controlled cinema monopolies, a corrupt police force and oppressive censorship laws in his quest to make truly Australian films. This forgotten pioneer managed to produce startling non-fiction films that broke new ground by covering controversial social problems such as poverty, slum housing, child exploitation, illegal gambling, cocaine smuggling and murder. This study includes an examination of crime and social issues in Australian cinema during the first half of the twentieth century.
