Description: This article considers the relevance and value of the employment relations paradigm by examining two case studies of compulsory unionism. It demonstrates the need to look beyond the individual union/s and employers concerned and to incorporate the role of other stakeholders and the internal and external environment into the analysis. Only by considering these factors, and the coalitions that are ultimately formed as a result, can a complete understanding of the introduction and fate of such strategies be realised.
