Design and performance of an ultra-wideband printed monopole with axis symmetrical elliptical slots for tunable band-notched characteristics is presented in this paper. In the proposed antenna, axis symmetrical elliptical shaped slots are cut vertically (along Y-axis) in the circular patch to achieve band-notch operation. The theoretically achieved impedance bandwidth of antenna is 2.51 GHz-10.60 GHz, for VSWR<2. With the insertion of slots band-notched characteristic from 5.03 GHz-5.90 GHz suitable for IEEE 802.11a WLAN band (5.15 - 5.35 GHz and 5.725 - 5.875 GHz) and HIPERLAN/2 band (5.450 - 5.725 GHz) has achieved. The tuning of rejection band with variation in the ellipticity of symmetrical elliptical slots is demonstrated. Antenna shows average gain of 4.05 dBi with a variation of 1.3 dB over the whole impedance bandwidth. In the notched band, the antenna gain falls down to 1.83 dBi compare to regular gain of 5.1 dBi. Complete design and performance results of propose novel configuration presented for the first time in this paper.
