Description: Drift nets are particularly destructive because they entrap nonharvest marine species. Following increased drift net fishing in the 1980s, the Convention for the Prohibition of Fishing with Long Drift Nets in the South Pacific (also known as the Wellington Convention) was adopted on the 17 May 1991 to prohibit the use of this equipment. The convention is an important component of international laws combining to outlaw large-scale drift nets globally.
